Kenya Safari Tours 2027: A Complete Guide for Canadians

Kenya Safari Tours 2027: A Complete Guide for Canadians

Kenya’s safari circuit just finished a record year, and Ottawa’s own travel advice makes clear that the areas drawing all those visitors — Nairobi’s main districts, the Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate — are not where the government’s stricter warnings apply. According to the African Travel and Tourism Association, Kenya welcomed roughly 7.9 million visitors in 2025, including 2.7 million international arrivals, up 9 per cent from 2024 and more than double the 4 per cent global growth rate, generating about Ksh500 billion in tourism revenue.

What Canada’s Travel Advisory Actually Covers

Kenya sits at “exercise a high degree of caution,” the same general level Canada applies to many popular long-haul destinations. Within that, a handful of specific regions carry stricter “avoid travel” advisories:

Every one of those is hundreds of kilometres from a standard safari route. Nairobi’s hotel and business districts, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park — the exact loop our Kenya safari follows — fall outside all of the regional “avoid” zones, leaving the baseline “exercise a high degree of caution” that applies across most of the country’s tourist infrastructure.

Who Is Actually Flying to Kenya

The same ATTA reporting breaks down where those international arrivals are coming from. Africa remains the largest source region at 47 per cent of visitors, followed by Europe at 25 per cent and the Americas at 14 per cent, with the United States holding its position as Kenya’s single largest individual source market. Leisure travel — safaris chief among it — accounted for 46 per cent of all arrivals, ahead of social visits at 20 per cent and business travel at 19 per cent, underlining that most people landing in Nairobi right now are there for exactly the kind of trip Canadians are booking.

What to Expect on a Kenya Safari

The Maasai Mara’s wildebeest migration peaks from roughly July through October, but the park delivers Big Five sightings year-round, and the two dry seasons (January-February and June-October) offer the easiest game viewing and driving conditions. A typical private itinerary pairs several nights of game drives in the Mara with time at Lake Naivasha and a boat safari at Hell’s Gate, where you can walk and cycle among wildlife rather than view it only from a vehicle.
